How to set up Android TV or Google TV for streaming: Google account, updates, installing apps from Google Play and the settings that improve playback.
Android TV is Google’s television platform, used on TVs from brands such as Sony, TCL, Philips and Hisense, and on many set-top boxes. Google TV is the newer interface built on top of Android TV; it adds a recommendation-focused home screen and is now the version shipped on most new devices. Underneath, both run Android apps from Google Play, so the setup process is very similar.
This guide covers what to do when you first switch on an Android TV or Google TV device, and the settings worth adjusting for better streaming.
If your home screen has tabs such as For you, Movies, Shows and Apps across the top, you have Google TV. If it shows rows of apps and channels without those tabs, it is the older Android TV interface. Menu locations differ slightly between them and between manufacturers, so treat the paths below as a guide.
During first boot you can usually choose between setting up with the Google Home app on your phone or using the remote. Phone setup copies your Wi-Fi details and Google account automatically, which saves typing passwords with a remote.
Google TV may offer a basic TV mode that skips the Google account. That mode cannot install apps, so choose the full setup if you plan to stream.
Use Ethernet if the TV or box has a port and a cable can reach. On Wi-Fi, choose the 5 GHz band where available. Connecting a streaming device to your home network explains the trade-offs.
Check for a system update before anything else, typically under Settings › System › About › System update. Then open Google Play, select your profile icon and choose Manage apps & device to update pre-installed apps. Our guide to updating streaming apps safely explains why updates matter and how to avoid problems.
On Google TV, search from the home screen or the Apps tab; on Android TV, open the Google Play Store. Install the apps you use and sign in.

Android TV can install app files (APKs) from other sources once you allow a specific app to “install unknown apps”. The location varies by manufacturer, often under Settings › Apps › Security & restrictions or similar. Only do this for software from a developer you trust, and read how to download streaming apps safely first.
Look under Settings › Display & Sound (or Picture on TVs):
If you use a soundbar or receiver over HDMI ARC/eARC, set the digital audio output to Auto first. If you hear nothing, try PCM to check the connection, then experiment with formats your sound system supports.
Captions and text size are under Settings › Accessibility. Setting preferences here means supporting apps follow them automatically. See accessible subtitles and audio settings for more.
Under Settings › Privacy, review location, usage and diagnostics sharing. If the TV is shared, Google TV supports separate profiles and kids’ profiles, which keeps recommendations and watch history apart.
Budget Android TV boxes often have limited storage and memory. If apps start to stutter:
Android TV and Fire TV both run Android underneath but feel quite different day to day. If you are deciding between them, Fire TV vs Android TV covers interface, apps and updates.
Choose the full setup with a Google account, update the system and pre-installed apps, install what you need from Google Play, then spend five minutes on picture, sound and privacy settings. That combination gives most Android TV and Google TV devices their best chance of smooth streaming.
