Apple TV is a small streaming box that runs tvOS and installs apps from Apple’s App Store. It is known for a responsive interface and strong support for high-quality video and audio formats, but a couple of its most useful settings are switched off by default. This guide covers setup and the settings that make the biggest difference to picture and sound.

Menu names below refer to recent tvOS versions and may vary slightly.

Step 1: Connect and power on

Connect the Apple TV to your TV with an HDMI cable. For the Apple TV 4K, use a cable rated for 4K HDR (often labelled High Speed or Ultra High Speed). If your TV has several HDMI ports, some may support higher bandwidth than others; the TV manual will say which ones support 4K HDR.

Step 2: Use your iPhone to speed up setup

When prompted, hold an unlocked iPhone near the Apple TV. It can transfer your Wi-Fi network and Apple ID automatically, saving a lot of typing with the remote. You can also set up manually.

Step 3: Choose the network connection

Many Apple TV models have an Ethernet port; at least one recent Wi-Fi-only configuration does not, so check yours. If yours has a port and a cable can reach it, use it. A wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi, which matters during live streams and high-bitrate 4K playback. Ethernet vs Wi-Fi for streaming explains why consistency beats peak speed.

Step 4: Update tvOS

Go to Settings › System › Software Updates, install any update and enable automatic updates.

Step 5: Set up video output

Open Settings › Video and Audio:

  • Format: the Apple TV chooses a format based on your TV. A 4K HDR TV should show a 4K HDR or 4K Dolby Vision option. Choosing 4K SDR here and enabling the match settings below is a common recommendation, because it keeps the menus in SDR and switches to HDR only when content is HDR.
  • Match Content › Match Dynamic Range: switches the output to HDR or Dolby Vision only when the video is mastered that way. Without it, SDR content may be converted to HDR and look wrong.
  • Match Content › Match Frame Rate: switches the output to the content’s frame rate (for example 24 frames per second for most films), which removes judder.

There may be a brief black screen as the TV switches modes; that is normal. HDR formats explained covers HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG.

Step 6: Set up audio

Still under Video and Audio:

  • Audio Format: leave on Auto unless troubleshooting. Changing to a specific format can help isolate problems with a soundbar or receiver.
  • Audio Output: you can send sound to HomePod speakers, AirPods or the TV.
  • Reduce Loud Sounds: helpful for late-night viewing.

If you use a soundbar over HDMI ARC or eARC, enable HDMI-CEC on the TV so the Apple TV remote can control power and volume.

Step 7: Install apps

Open the App Store on the Apple TV and search for your streaming services. Apps purchased on other Apple devices with the same Apple ID can often be downloaded without paying again if the developer offers a tvOS version.

Step 8: Profiles and restrictions

Apple TV supports multiple users so each person gets their own recommendations and watch history. Add people under Settings › Users and Accounts. To limit purchases or mature content, use Settings › General › Restrictions and set a passcode.

Accessibility

Under Settings › Accessibility › Subtitles and Captioning, turn on Closed Captions and SDH and choose a style. Audio descriptions can be enabled in the same section. See accessible subtitles and audio settings for a cross-platform overview.

Troubleshooting basics

  • Picture flickers or goes black: try a different HDMI cable or port, or lower the format temporarily to rule out bandwidth limits.
  • Remote not responding: charge it, then hold the TV and Volume Up buttons for a few seconds to re-pair (method varies by remote generation).
  • App freezes: double-click the TV button, swipe the app up to close it, and reopen.
  • Buffering: start with the network; see how to fix buffering.

Is an Apple TV worth it over a stick?

Apple TV costs more than most streaming sticks, but offers faster hardware, long software support and Ethernet on many models. Whether that matters depends on how you watch; streaming sticks vs streaming boxes compares the trade-offs.

Final word

Use your iPhone for setup, connect by Ethernet if you can, update tvOS, and — most importantly — turn on Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. Those two settings are the main reason some Apple TV owners see a noticeably better picture than others with the same box.
